South Africa is known for its dark past due to Apartheid. Today, the country is an exotic destination where you can visit turquoise beaches or the savannah, big cities or small Zulu villages.

Currency

The local currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). If you plan to use your cards at your destination, be sure to inform your financial institution of the dates of your stay.

Health

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) recommends that you consult a health professional to discuss vaccinations against the following diseases: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, influenza, rabies, yellow fever and measles. Please note that two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine are required to fly from Canada and to cross the United States border.

Passports

“Your passport must be valid for at least 30 days after your intended departure date from South Africa. Your passport must contain at least 2 blank pages for your temporary resident permit or you may be turned away upon arrival.

You may also be denied boarding the plane at the point of departure if you do not have the required number of blank pages for your visa. If you plan to travel to neighboring countries and back to South Africa, make sure you have enough pages in your passport for visas for those countries and for South Africa.” – Government of Canada

Language

There are 11 official languages in South Africa. The most commonly used are English and Afrikaans. Other languages are Transvaal Ndebele, Northern Sotho, Southern Sotho, Swati, Tsonga, Tswana, Venda, Xhosa and Zulu.
