Being an independent country since its dissociation from Hungary in 1918, Austria is now a neutral state in its international relations. Tourism is a very important economic factor for the country. The Alpine regions are the most popular with tourists, followed by the large cities of Vienna, Linz, Salzburg and Graz. Austria has a collection of remarkable historical and cultural monuments such as castles, palaces, museums and churches. During the summer season, mountain sports such as hiking and mountaineering are practiced. During the winter season, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, sledding and many other winter sports are practiced. In recent years, wellness tourism has become increasingly popular. Austria has more than 84 thermal spas. Also, business tourism is important in the country, especially in large centers like Vienna.

Currency

The official currency of Austria is the Euro (EUR). This currency can be used most countries of the European Union. If you plan to use your cards at your destination, don’t forget to inform your financial institution of the dates of your stay.

Health

The Public Health Agency of Canada recommends that you consult a health professional to discuss vaccines for the following diseases: hepatitis B, influenza, tick-borne encephalitis, yellow fever and measles. When in doubt, remember not to ingest anything that has not been boiled, cooked or peeled!

Language

The official language of Austria is German. However, it is possible to be served in English in most tourist places.

Passports

“Austria is a Schengen country. Canadian citizens do not need a visa to travel to Schengen countries. However, you can only travel without a visa for 90 days or less within a 180-day period. Stays are cumulative and include days spent in any Schengen country. “Government of Canada

According to the Canadian Government, your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the date of your expected return from the Schengen area.
